The experience
Eight to nine hours takes you through three wine and cheese stops across the UNESCO-protected Val d'Orcia landscape. You start at a Montepulciano winery around 10 a.m. with an in-depth tour of the cellar led by a professional wine expert, followed by a guided tasting of four to five local reds, each paired with bruschetta topped in locally produced olive oil. From there, the route moves to Pienza, a medieval town built around its Pecorino cheese. You get a quick walking tour and free time to browse the cheese shops before heading into the countryside.
Lunch happens at a sustainable, family-run cheese farm in the Val d'Orcia, where you watch the production of pecorino and ricotta before sitting down to eat. The farm's terrace overlooks the Orcia Valley: one of the most photographed stretches in Tuscany, where the film Gladiator was shot. You eat a light lunch with wine and a selection of the farm's own cheeses. After lunch, the final stop is a Brunello winery in Montalcino, where another cellar tour walks you through the winemaking process before a tasting of five different wines from the region. The drive between stops follows the scenic roads of the Val d'Orcia itself.
A private driver picks you up from your hotel and handles all the driving. You do not arrange transport between stops. The guide speaks English and leads the tastings and tours at each location. Lunch and all wine tastings are included in the price.
