Trekking and tasting in Montalcino

  • Walk through Brunello vineyards
  • View dedications and art works
  • Enjoy typical Tuscan lunch
  • Taste Orcia Doc and Brunello wines
  • Visit dairy and taste 11 cheeses

The experience

The walk starts in the vineyard itself: the Brunello homeland in Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The path winds through the vines past works by contemporary Tuscan artists and plaques honoring winners of the Casato Prime Donne Award. A sommelier guide explains what you're walking through and what makes this corner of Tuscany distinct. The terrain is gentle. The tour suits all fitness levels.

Lunch happens in the cellar's tasting room, set with old Ginori dishes and served family-style: bread, peasant vegetable soups, cured meats, pecorino cheeses, black crostini alla Senese, and seasonal vegetables, finished with a traditional dessert. An Orcia Doc and a Brunello come in crystal goblets. The sommelier pours and talks through both wines while you eat in the warm, traditional Tuscan atmosphere of the cellar itself.

After lunch, a short drive takes you to the Pecorino di Pienza DOP dairy. A staff member walks you through the production of eleven cheeses and you taste them. Pecorino di Pienza has its own protected designation. It comes only from this area and follows strict rules about milk source and aging. The tasting gives you the range: younger, softer wheels alongside aged, harder ones with a crystalline bite.
