The Experience

I almost missed our guide at the meeting spot—he waved, I waved back, but we both hesitated like maybe we’d got the wrong person. Turns out that’s just how Milan feels at first: a little mysterious, slightly intimidating. But within five minutes of walking, weaving past scooters and the smell of espresso drifting from some tiny bar (seriously, Milanese coffee is its own thing), I felt like I could breathe again. Our guide, Luca, started off by pointing out the Pinacoteca di Brera—not just “that big art place,” but where he said he used to sneak in as a student for inspiration. That made me grin. It’s weirdly comforting to know locals still get lost in their own city sometimes.

We took a turn that led us away from the crowds—Luca seemed to know exactly when to dodge tour groups and when to pause for stories. He stopped us in front of Bosco Verticale (the Vertical Forest) and I swear it looked like someone had glued an entire hillside onto two apartment buildings. There was this faint earthy smell from all those trees crammed onto balconies—unexpected in such a concrete city. At one point, an old man leaned out his window above us and shouted something about “la bellezza verde.” Luca laughed and translated: “He says you should come back in spring when everything blooms.” Maybe I will.

I didn’t expect to care much about Piazza Mercanti or the Gallerie d’Italia Milan—I mean, they’re on every list—but hearing about them from someone who actually lives here makes it different. Like how he described the way light hits Santa Maria presso San Satiro at sunset (“it turns gold for just ten minutes,” he said), or which bakery sells panettone even outside Christmas (I wrote it down but probably spelled it wrong). The whole 90-minute walk felt more like tagging along with a friend than following a script. We finished near Ambrosiana Library; Luca pointed out his favorite reading spot under the arches before waving us off with a quick “buona giornata.”
