The Experience

The walk starts in Brera, the district that takes its name from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and built its reputation as a place of artists and bohemian life. Your guide leads you down Via Fiori Chiari and Via Madonnina, streets now lined with antique and vintage shops, galleries and art dealers — these were once the city's red light district, housed in buildings that still carry that history in their facades. You'll see the courtyard of Brera Palace with its bronze copy of Canova's statue of Napoleon as Mars Peacemaker, and pass the Brera Art Gallery itself (the collection requires a separate ticket, but the courtyard and exterior are part of the walk).

Moving deeper into the neighborhood, you reach San Simpliciano Basilica, one of Milan's oldest churches, dating to the third century and still preserving its original cloister. From there the route crosses into Moscova, a completely different Milan — the heart of contemporary nightlife and design. You walk via Solferino and via San Marco to the Conca dell'Incoronata, the basin that Leonardo da Vinci designed to connect the Martesana canal with the city's central waterways. The newer Porta Nuova district comes next, a pedestrian-focused urban renewal project with offices, shops and residential buildings linked by gardens, squares and footbridges. The Unicredit Tower, Italy's highest skyscraper, rises above Piazza Gae Aulenti at the center of this complex.

The final stops are Eataly, the Italian market-hall housed in the old Teatro Smeraldo building, and 10 Corso Como, the design and lifestyle concept shop founded in 1990 by gallerist Carla Sozzani. The space combines fashion, art, music, furniture and books under one roof and has become a reference point for Milan's design scene. The tour ends in this area, leaving you in one of Milan's most active neighborhoods.
