The experience
The tour starts at Piazza del Duomo, the heart of Milan, where the cathedral dominates a square that has served as the city's main gathering place for centuries. The Duomo itself is white marble Gothic, begun in 1386 and built over five centuries by architects from across Europe. It's the most important example of Gothic architecture in Italy and one of the largest Catholic churches in the world. You walk through the interior, then climb to the rooftop terraces where you can stand among towering spires and intricate marble statues while Milan's blend of history and modernity unfolds below.
From there the guide takes you to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy's oldest active shopping mall, a four-story double arcade built between 1865 and 1877 that still pulses with the city's fashion and design scene. You pass the façade of La Scala, the opera house where Verdi and the world's finest singers have performed for the past 200 years and which remains one of the leading opera and ballet theatres globally. Then comes Sforza Castle, built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan: the same man who hosted Leonardo da Vinci for about twenty years. Inside are works by Leonardo and Michelangelo's Pietà Rondanini.
The tour ends at Santa Maria delle Grazie, a Renaissance church and UNESCO World Heritage site, where Leonardo's Last Supper hangs on the wall of the former Dominican convent's dining room, exactly where it was painted between 1494 and 1498. During this final part of the tour, you may join a small group in English if you've booked a private guide in another language. Tickets to both the Duomo and the Last Supper are included. The operator books the Last Supper entry in advance, so you don't arrange it yourself.
