The experience
The tour opens in late morning at the Duomo, where your guide points out the flying buttresses and the bronze Madonnina statue crowning the main spire of what many consider one of the world's most beautiful churches. From there you move into the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the majestic 19th-century arcade known as Milan's Drawing Room, lined with boutique shops and cafés under glass vaults.
At La Scala, built in 1776, you enter the museum and sit in one of the 4th row boxes to see the horseshoe auditorium where Verdi, Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti once performed. If the theatre is not accessible on the day of your tour, you receive a ticket valid all day to visit it on your own schedule. From there the route takes you through Piazza dei Mercanti, a quieter medieval square where Bramante's Renaissance architecture creates an optical illusion of space, then on to Sforza Castle, the former fortress of the Dukes of Milan, now housing several of the city's museums.
The walk stays in the city center and is suitable for all fitness levels. Children from age 3 are welcome, and the route is wheelchair accessible. A minimum of two people is required per booking.
