The experience

You download the digital guide to your phone, then walk Mantua on your own schedule. The audio plays through your speakers or headphones as you move between stops, and text descriptions back up everything you hear. The route threads through the city's core: Piazza delle Erbe, ringed by arcaded buildings and the clock tower that tracks moon phases and zodiac signs; the Rotonda di San Lorenzo, a Romanesque rotunda built around a relic of the Holy Sepulcher; the Basilica of St. Andrew, which holds one of Christianity's most significant relics, the blood of Christ. You'll also pass the Loggia delle Pescherie along the Rio, a historic market building, and the Teatro Scientifico del Bibiena, an 18th-century theater known for its acoustics and beauty.

The two largest palaces (the Ducal Palace and Palazzo Te) sit at the heart of the tour. The Ducal Palace, seat of the Gonzaga family for nearly four centuries, spans over 500 rooms across 34,000 square meters and includes the San Giorgio Castle, Corte Nuova and Corte Vecchia. Palazzo Te, commissioned by Federico II Gonzaga, stands as a masterpiece of Italian Mannerism. Both require separate tickets (15€ each), but the guide prepares you for what you'll see inside and out. You'll also stop at Piazza Sordello, Mantua's largest square and the historic center of the city's political and religious life, and the Cathedral, whose origins trace back to the fifth century.

The guide includes tips on local restaurants serving authentic food and Italian aperitivo culture, so you can eat where locals do. You'll need a smartphone with internet to activate the guide, details come in your voucher, and the route works for all fitness levels. Wheelchair access is available, and parents can bring strollers. Service animals are welcome. The whole walk takes five to six hours depending on how long you linger at each stop.
