The experience

The Ducal Palace is the heart of this tour: a 35,000-square-metre complex of buildings, galleries, inner courts, gardens and a castle built by the Gonzagas, the Renaissance family who made Mantua one of Italy's leading cultural centres. Your guide walks you through the city's main squares first: Piazza delle Erbe, bordered by a 15th-century astrolabe and a Romanesque church, and Piazza Sordello, the large medieval square ringed by the cathedral and the Bishop's seat. Then you enter the palace itself.

Inside, the Camera Picta, the bridal chamber, is what stops most visitors. Andrea Mantegna, one of the Renaissance's most important painters, turned the entire room into a work of art with frescoes that create the optical illusion of an open portico overlooking countryside. The palace also holds many other architectural and painted elements beyond this one chamber, though Mantegna's work is what the palace is known for. The tour lasts three hours and moves at a pace suitable for all fitness levels.

The Ducal Palace entry ticket is separate from the tour price and costs €18 per person. Because entry is quota-controlled, booking it in advance is highly recommended: in high season, same-day tickets often sell out. After you book the tour, send an email to your guide and she'll provide all the details for securing your palace ticket. Public transport runs near the tour meeting point if you're arriving without a car.

What is the Camera Picta and why is it famous?

The Camera Picta is the bridal chamber inside the Ducal Palace, painted entirely by Andrea Mantegna in the 15th century. The frescoes cover the walls and ceiling with such skill that they create the illusion of an open portico overlooking the countryside. It's considered one of the masterpieces of Renaissance art.

Do I need to book the Ducal Palace ticket before the tour, or can I buy it on the day?

The palace ticket must be booked in advance because entry is quota-controlled and sells out quickly, especially in high season. After you reserve the tour, your guide will email you with all the information you need to secure your €18 ticket separately.

How long does the tour take and what squares do we visit?

The tour lasts three hours and covers Piazza delle Erbe, a medieval market square with a 15th-century astrolabe and Romanesque church, and Piazza Sordello, the large historic square surrounded by the cathedral, Bishop's seat and Ducal Palace.
