I didn’t expect the water around Lipari to look like that—so clear it almost made me nervous to jump in. Our captain, Gianni, grinned when he saw my hesitation and just said, “Vai!” So I did. Praia Vinci was our first stop, this little beach you can only reach by boat. The cliffs felt huge above us, and there was this faint smell of salt and wild herbs drifting down. I floated for a while just listening to the slap of water against the hull—no crowds, just us and the sound of someone laughing somewhere up on deck.
We cruised past those crazy rock stacks—the Faraglioni—and Gianni pointed out the Arco degli Angeli arch. He told a story about fishermen making wishes as they sailed under it (I tried but probably got my Italian all wrong). Crossing over to Vulcano felt like stepping into another world: the air changed, thicker somehow, with this earthy scent from the volcano itself. We circled around places I’d never even heard of—Venus Pool with its weirdly blue water, then Horse Cave where sunlight bounced green off the walls. At one point we stopped so close to shore I could see tiny yellow flowers clinging to black lava rock.
Lunch was a choice—either Vulcano Porto or this tiny spot in Gelso where we ended up sharing grilled fish with some locals who’d come by scooter. The wine was cold and honestly tasted better after swimming all morning (maybe everything does). On the way back I wrapped up in one of their towels and just watched the islands drift by through salt-streaked sunglasses. There’s something about being out there—between Lipari and Vulcano—that sticks with you longer than you think it will.
