Step-by-step itinerary
Hike and tasting in Vernazza
- Visit Vernazza village square
- Hike path towards Monterosso
- Visit lemon grove at La Bottega Farm
- Taste limoncino, wine, and focaccia
The experience
The hike starts in Vernazzo's village square, where the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia sits above the water. From there the path climbs along the terraced slopes, opening views back down to the village and across the Cinque Terre coast. You're walking the SVA path, the same route that connects these five villages, but you leave it before reaching Monterosso. The destination is the lemon grove itself.
At Azienda Agricola La Bottega, the lemons surround you on the hillside. The tasting includes limoncino made from those lemons, other liqueurs, Cinque Terre DOC wine and focaccia, the flatbread that appears at every meal along this coast. A guide leads the whole experience in English or Italian, and the farm adds a small surprise at the end. The trek has short, steep sections, so proper hiking shoes matter. Open-toed shoes won't work. Dogs are welcome if kept on a leash, as required in the national park.
Two hours covers the walk, the grove and the tasting. Public transport runs nearby if you need it to reach the starting point or leave afterward. Children from age two can join. The hike suits moderate fitness, though it's not recommended for travelers with mobility concerns or cardiovascular limitations.
