"So we're actually going to cruise past George Clooney's place?" That's the question that lands first when you book a private motorboat on Lake Como. The answer is yes — but it's not the point. What happens is you leave the Como pier in front of Bar Lario in a refitted 2024 Colombo speedboat with one of four captains (Marco, Stefano, Alice or Alberto), and the lake stops being a postcard and becomes a geography of stories. The western shore fills up with villas that belonged to people — Gianni Versace, Luchino Visconti, the Mandarin Oriental's architects — and your captain knows which windows opened onto which lives.

The route moves at the pace you want it to. You head north past Villa Olmo, its Neoclassical bulk and Italian gardens sitting solid on the water, then into Cernobbio where Villa Erba and Villa d'Este stack the skyline so densely it feels like the whole town is made of stone and history. After that comes Moltrasio and Carate Urio with their private villas climbing the slopes, and then Laglio — the town that animated itself around one person's choice to live there.
