The experience

You're picked up from your hotel and travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver who knows the island well enough to explain what you're seeing as you go. The route runs anti-clockwise around the coast, keeping the sea on your right, so you're never far from the water. After passing through Casamicciola Terme, one of Ischia's spa towns, you stop at the Mushroom of Lacco Ameno, a distinctive green tuff boulder rising from the sea that's become the landmark photo most visitors want.

From there the tour moves through the Bay of San Montano, where you can see Negombo thermal park from above, then into Forio d'Ischia, the largest municipality on the island. You pass La Mortella, the island's most famous botanical garden, and stop at Punta Caruso viewpoint for another photograph. The Church of Soccorso comes next: the most recognizable church on Ischia, built right over the water and a popular wedding venue. Then you reach Sant'Angelo, a pedestrian fishing village on a peninsula that feels like its own small island. This is the longest stop on the tour, and you have time to walk around or simply sit by the water.

The driver then takes you up to about 400 meters above sea level to a viewpoint overlooking the Isolotto di Sant'Angelo, where you can stop for an aperitif or coffee at a bar. The route continues through Fontana and into Barano, where you stop at Maronti Beach, the most famous beach on the island. At the end, you choose whether to return to your starting point or be dropped at Ischia Ponte, the historic village two kilometers from the port, where the Aragonese Castle (ranked by the New York Times among the world's ten most beautiful castles) is within walking distance if you want to explore it on your own time.
