The Experience

The boat leaves Forio in the morning, and the first thing you see is the Chiesa del Soccorso, the white church standing on its promontory above the sea. From there the route heads east along Ischia's coast, passing Lacco Ameno and the Aragonese Castle—a 113-meter volcanic islet connected to the shore by a 220-meter bridge, built in the fifteenth century. The crew chooses the best swimming spots based on the day's conditions, which might include the bay near Lacco Ameno, San Montano, the English Beach, or Ciraccio. At the first stop you get an aperitif of local tomato bruschetta and wine before the boat continues toward Procida.

Procida appears as a cluster of colorful houses and fishing boats, the kind of place that has stood in for southern Italy in films like Il Postino and The Talented Mr. Ripley. On the approach you'll see Marina Corricella, the seventeenth-century fishing village arranged like an amphitheater on the water, and Vivara, a small protected nature reserve connected to Procida by a footbridge. Lunch is served on board while you're still at sea, Mediterranean-style dishes and drinks included. Then the boat moors at Marina Grande and you have about an hour and a half to walk the narrow streets, sit by the water, or visit the Palazzo d'Avalos, the sixteenth-century palace that later became a prison. A taxi guide is available for an overland tour of the island for €15 per person if you want to see more.

The return to Forio has no scheduled stops, though the captain may adjust the route if weather has forced changes earlier in the day. Bottled water, coffee and tea are available throughout, and the crew provides maximum assistance for any particular needs—though there are some physical limitations the boat cannot overcome, which the operator notes upfront.
