Summary

Italian Street Food Tasting in Civitavecchia’s Historic Center

You’ll taste your way through Civitavecchia’s markets with a local guide—prosciutti, cheese, porchetta, wine, even gelato—all picked out by someone who knows the city inside out. Perfect if you want to skip tourist traps and try what locals actually eat.

experience

What’s the experience like?

Our morning started right at the port—easy enough, since our guide met us at Largo della Pace, just where the shuttle drops you off. She wore her blue badge and waved us over with a big grin, like she’d been waiting for old friends. The air smelled faintly of sea salt and fresh bread from somewhere nearby. We hopped on the free shuttle together, chatting about what locals actually eat here (hint: it’s not just pizza).

The first stop was the old fish market. It’s not huge, but wow—the noise! Fishermen in rubber boots calling out prices, a woman selling anchovies wrapped in paper. Our guide pointed out which stalls her own nonna used to buy from. Then we wandered into the food market next door. I tried a slice of porchetta that was still warm, plus salty olives and white pizza cut into squares. There were little wine shops tucked between bakeries—one had shelves lined with bottles from Lazio I’d never seen before.

We ended up in a tiny winery shop for a tasting—salami, cheese, and local wine poured by a guy who looked like he’d been doing this forever. He told us stories about the city’s old districts while we nibbled rice balls and sipped red wine. Just when I thought I couldn’t eat another bite, our guide insisted we finish with gelato from her favorite spot (pistachio for me). It felt relaxed and real—not rushed or touristy at all.
