Portovenere hike from Cinque Terre: 6-hour trek with local guide
Six hours on the ridge above Cinque Terre, ending at a fishing village on the water.
A small-group hike from Riomaggiore to Portovenere in Cinque Terre, led by a local guide in English, covering intermediate terrain with steep sections and narrow outer-trail passages. The trek takes six hours; groups stay under ten people, usually four or fewer. After arrival, the afternoon is yours — swim, eat, or walk the alleys — before taking the ferry or bus back to Cinque Terre. Not suitable for travelers with vertigo or poor cardiovascular fitness.
The Experience
You start in Riomaggiore and climb the hillside to reach the main trail, gaining views that shift as the landscape changes throughout the day. The pace is yours to set, and the guide stops for photos and explains the history of Cinque Terre and the surrounding area as you walk. Bring good walking shoes with traction, a backpack, hat, sunglasses, water and a light rain jacket — the trail includes thin sections on the outer edge where the ground drops away, and there is no margin for slipping.
After six hours of trekking, you arrive in Portovenere. The village sits on a peninsula with a harbor, and the time from then on is unscheduled: you can swim off the rocks, sit down for lunch at one of the restaurants, or wander the narrow back alleys. The guide provides your return ticket. Normally you take the ferry back to Riomaggiore (18 euros, a chance to see the distance you've covered from the water) or to La Spezia port (8 euros), or the bus (2.50 euros) — these costs are separate from the tour price. If seas are rough and ferries are canceled, the bus and train back to Cinque Terre become your route instead.

Is this one for you?The six-hour trek and narrow ridge sections mean this hike suits travelers with moderate to good fitness who are comfortable on steep, exposed terrain — not a casual stroll, and not for anyone with vertigo or cardiovascular concerns. The small group size (usually four or fewer) and the unscheduled afternoon in Portovenere work well if you want to set your own pace and have time to rest and eat after the walk.

How fit do I need to be to hike to Portovenere?
The hike to Portovenere requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness and good cardiovascular health. The six-hour trek is intermediate in difficulty, with steep climbing and narrow sections of trail; it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular fitness or anyone who experiences vertigo.
What should I bring on the hike?
Bring good walking shoes with traction (no sandals, flip-flops or open-toe shoes), a backpack, hat, sunglasses, water and a light rain jacket. The trail crosses exposed sections where grip matters, and the weather can change.
What happens after I reach Portovenere?
Once you arrive in Portovenere, the afternoon is yours. You can swim, have lunch at a local restaurant, or explore the village's back alleys. Your guide provides the ticket for the return journey — ferry to Riomaggiore, ferry to La Spezia, or bus back to Cinque Terre — though the ferry or bus fare is paid separately.
How many people hike on this tour?
Groups are small, with a maximum of ten people per booking. The average group is one to four people, so you are rarely hiking in a crowd.
What if the ferry is canceled?
If seas are high and all ferries are canceled, you return to Cinque Terre by bus and train instead of by boat. The guide will arrange this alternative route.
Is the hike suitable for someone with vertigo?
No. The trek crosses thin sections on the outer trail where the ground drops away, and there is no protection. This hike is not recommended for anyone with vertigo or a fear of heights.
