A 90-minute boat tour of Chioggia's Venetian Lagoon explores three working aquaculture farms: a mussel operation, an oyster farm, and the selection boxes where soft-shell Moleche crabs are sorted. Step-by-step itinerary

Aquaculture tour in Chioggia Lagoon

  • Visit mussel farm and learn breeding
  • Explore oyster farm and production phases
  • Observe crab selection process

The experience

The boat leaves from Chioggia and moves through the shallow lagoon to three separate farms, each one showing a different part of how the region's seafood gets to the table. At the mussel farm, you watch the breeding setup and learn the work that goes into cultivation. The oyster operation reveals why each phase of growth matters for the final product: the timing, the water conditions, the handling. Then you pass through the selection boxes where fishermen sort the Moleche, the soft-shell crabs that transform seasonally, and see the skill required to identify them at the right moment.

The boat itself is a restored traditional vessel built for the lagoon, comfortable enough for the shallow water and small enough to reach the working areas. Life jackets are available on request. Your guide speaks English, French, Spanish or Italian and knows the lagoon's conditions and the farms' operations firsthand. You can ask to stop for photos anywhere along the route.

The tour runs 90 minutes total. Children under two don't occupy a seat. Children aged two to three take a seat but don't pay. Infants must sit on an adult's lap. Strollers and prams are welcome, and service animals are allowed on board.
