What’s the experience like?

I stepped onto the Sorrento Gozzo half-awake, still tasting my morning espresso. Our skipper—Antonio—smiled like he’d seen a thousand travelers fumble with sunscreen before. The sea was glassy but you could smell salt everywhere, even in your hair. We left the marina and suddenly the cliffs of Capri were right there, impossibly high, all craggy and sun-bleached. I kept thinking, “Is this real?”—and then Antonio pointed out the Faraglioni rocks. He said locals make a wish when they pass through. So I did (not telling what it was).

We drifted close to the Blue Grotto, waiting for that flash of electric blue under the arch. Honestly, it’s smaller than I pictured but way more magical—like someone left a neon light on underwater. There was this moment where everyone just went quiet except for the water lapping at the hull. Later we passed Marina Piccola and saw kids jumping off rocks like it was nothing. Our hostess handed me a cold drink—I think it was limoncello spritz?—and I nearly dropped it when a school of silver fish darted by.

The coast changed as we sailed toward Positano and Amalfi: pastel houses stacked up steep hillsides, laundry flapping from tiny balconies, old men waving from fishing boats. We stopped near Praiano to swim; the water felt colder than expected but so clear you could see every pebble on the bottom. Someone asked about snorkels and Antonio just grinned—he had a whole stash ready. I tried to say “grazie” with my mouth full of biscotti; he laughed and handed me another snack anyway.

I still think about how the air smelled different after we passed Conca dei Marini—almost sweet from all those lemon terraces above us. By late afternoon I just lay back on deck, sun-warm and salty, not really wanting to check my phone or even talk much anymore. Sometimes you don’t realize how loud your own head is until you’re out here listening to nothing but waves.
