Step-by-step itinerary
Cagliari city and coastal highlights
- Disembark and meet guide
- Visit Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria
- Enjoy panoramic views from Monte Urpinu
- See pink flamingos at Molentargius lagoon
- Relax at Poetto Beach
- Explore Castello and Cagliari Cathedral
- Drive back to port or city center
The experience
The tour starts at the port or your hotel and moves straight to the Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria, the first Gothic church built in Sardinia, where your guide walks you through the original sacristy and its seventeenth-century paintings. From there, Monte Urpinu offers panoramic views across Cagliari and the gulf: a natural stopping point to take in the city's scale and position on the coast. The Molentargius lagoon sits behind Poetto Beach, a long stretch of sand backed by a Spanish tower and the Devil's Saddle rock formation. The lagoon is where the pink flamingos live, visible from the road without leaving the van.
The Castello, Cagliari's medieval heart, sits at the top of the old town. A short walk brings you to the Cathedral, a Romanesque structure with an interior your guide explains as you move through it: the religious and historical weight of the space is what makes the climb worth it. The tour ends with a comfortable drive back to the port in time for re-boarding, or you can be dropped in the heart of town to explore on foot.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Italian.
What is the Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria?
The Basilica of Our Lady of Bonaria is Sardinia's first Gothic church, built centuries ago as a symbol of faith for the city. Inside, you'll see the original sacristy and seventeenth-century paintings, and your guide will explain the religious significance of the miraculous Lady of Bonaria to Cagliari's history.
Can I see the pink flamingos on this tour?
Yes. The Molentargius lagoon behind Poetto Beach is home to pink flamingos, and you'll pass the salt flats where they gather. You'll see them from the van as part of the coastal section of the tour.
How much time do I spend walking versus driving?
Most of the tour is by van, with two main walking stops: a short walk at Monte Urpinu for the panoramic views, and a walk inside Cagliari Cathedral in the Castello district. The rest is comfortable driving between sites.
What is the Castello and why visit it?
The Castello is the medieval heart of Cagliari, built on high ground at the top of the old town. It contains the Cathedral and the fourteenth-century Pisan towers, and the drive to the top gives you the highest viewpoint in the city before you step inside the Cathedral itself.
