The experience

You control the pace entirely. Download the digital guide to your phone before you go, and you're free to start whenever you want, linger at any stop, or skip ahead. The audio plays through your phone's speakers or your own headphones, and the written text is there if you prefer to read. Five languages are built in (English, Spanish, Italian, French, and German), so you can switch between them as you walk.

The route threads through Alghero's old town, starting at the Porta Terra Tower, a 14th-century remnant of the city's medieval defensive walls. From there you move to the Church of San Francesco, a Gothic-Catalan structure from the late 15th century with its own convent and cloister, then to the Archaeological Museum (MUSA) in a 15th-century building. The Cathedral of Santa Maria anchors the spiritual heart of the city. Its bell tower is one of the first things you notice looking at Alghero from the sea. You'll also see the San Giovanni Tower and the San Giacomo Tower, both built in the 16th century in Catalan-Aragonese style, and the Church of Saint Michael with its distinctive Baroque dome. The Coral Museum sits in the historic center and documents centuries of the city's red coral tradition.

The whole route takes two to three hours depending on how long you spend at each stop. Restaurants recommended in the guide are places locals actually eat, not tourist traps, and the tips explain what makes each dish or tradition worth trying. You'll need a smartphone with an internet connection to activate the guide, the details come in your voucher, and the route is wheelchair accessible if you need it.
