The experience

The tour departs Bari and heads to Alberobello, the capital of the trulli region. Upon arrival, you'll visit the Aia Piccola, where the original cone-roofed stone houses still stand as they have for centuries. Your guide leads you through the quaint streets of the historic center, pointing out the Monti district and the Trullo Church while explaining the traditions and stories behind these distinctive buildings. The narrow, winding paths give you a sense of how people lived in these compact, ingeniously designed homes.

The journey then continues to Matera, one of the oldest cities in the world. Here you'll walk through the Sassi, a sprawling complex of cave dwellings carved directly into the rock face. You'll enter a real cave house to see how families lived in these spaces, and you'll stand on viewpoints overlooking the Murgia plateau. Your guide shares the city's millennia-old history and its transformation in recent decades, along with stories of why international filmmakers have chosen Matera as a location. After the guided portion, you have an hour to explore on your own, grab lunch at a local restaurant, or browse the small craft shops scattered through the old town.

The tour spans eight hours total, including the drive from Bari. You'll need comfortable shoes for the walking sections, which involve uphill paths on uneven stone steps. Bring plenty of water. Depending on which option you choose at checkout, you can book a guide and driver together, or a driver only if you prefer to explore independently.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian and Romanian.

What are the trulli of Alberobello?

The trulli are distinctive cone-roofed stone houses unique to the Alberobello region. Built without mortar, they were designed to be quickly dismantled if taxes were imposed. You'll see them throughout the historic center and visit the Aia Piccola, where the original trulli are still preserved.

What will I see inside the Sassi cave dwellings in Matera?

The Sassi is a complex of homes carved directly into the rock face over centuries. You'll enter an actual cave house to see how families lived in these spaces, with narrow rooms and openings that let in light and air. Rock-hewn churches are scattered throughout, and the viewpoints over the Murgia plateau show the scale of the settlement.

How much walking is involved in this tour?

Both Alberobello and Matera require walking through historic centers on narrow, uneven stone streets. The paths include uphill sections with uneven steps, so comfortable shoes are essential. The walking is spread across the two sites rather than continuous, and you'll have an hour of free time in Matera to rest if needed.

Can I choose between a guide and driver-only option?

Yes. You can book the tour with both a private guide and driver, or with a driver only if you prefer to explore the sites at your own pace without guided commentary. Both options include private transportation from Bari and entry to the cave house in Matera.

Is there time to eat during the tour?

You have one hour of free time in Matera to have lunch on your own at a local restaurant, grab food from a shop, or simply explore. The tour does not include a meal, so you'll arrange and pay for lunch separately.
