The experience
You start from your Tel Aviv hotel and head north along the Mediterranean coast. The first stop is Caesarea, where you walk through the ancient Roman port and stand inside a 1st-century amphitheater built when this was a major trading hub under Herod the Great. The scale of what remains (stone seats, arches, the harbor layout itself) gives a sense of how the city once functioned.
From Caesarea, the route continues to Haifa, where you climb to the top of the Baha'i Gardens for a view across the bay, then pushes north to Rosh Hanikra at the Lebanese border. A cable car lowers you down the cliff face to sea level, where you explore natural grottos carved into the rock by waves over centuries. On a clear day, you can see across the border from the summit. The grottos and the cable car ride are the physical centerpiece of the day: a shift from walking ruins to moving through the landscape itself.
The final stop is Acre, a walled Crusader port city where you descend into the underground tunnels and chambers the Crusaders built beneath street level. These passages connect to the harbor and show how the medieval city was organized below ground. By late afternoon, the drive back to Tel Aviv gives you time to sit with what you've seen: four different eras of settlement, each one layered into the same stretch of coast.
