The experience
The first thing I noticed was the way Ross Castle just sits there at the edge of Lough Léin: like it’s waiting for something. We’d barely stepped onto the Lily of Killarney boat when our captain waved us in with a grin, joking about the “famous” Killarney drizzle (it was more like a soft mist that morning, honestly). The glass roof fogged up a little at first, but you could still see the water stretching out, all silvery and restless. There’s this hush as you push off. Just the engine humming and someone’s raincoat squeaking behind me.
I didn’t expect to feel so small floating past Innisfallen Island. Our guide pointed out what looked like just some stones under trees, but he said it was a 6th-century monastery. I tried to picture monks living out there in that green silence. He told us stories about copper mines on Ross Island too, apparently people were digging here thousands of years ago? That part surprised me. The air smelled green (if that makes sense): wet leaves and something earthy from the old oak woods along the banks. Every now and then you’d catch a bit of laughter from another family at the back, or hear ducks flapping by.
We drifted closer to the MacGillycuddy Reeks, and suddenly Carrauntoohil was right there: a dark shape behind clouds. Our captain slowed down so we could take it in.
