The Experience
Two to two and a half hours. That's how long you're in the workshop on Drury Street, and by the end of it you're holding a sterling silver ring you shaped with your own hands. The studio is small—old Dublin building, plenty of stairs, no lift—but that's part of it. You're not in a factory. You're in a place where people actually make things.
The class starts with marking. You choose which finger the ring goes on, measure the silver to length, and cut it with a handsaw. Then comes the mallet and the ring mandrel—you're forming the band, watching it curve into shape under your own swing. An expert tutor is there the whole time, explaining what's happening as she solders the joint in front of you. You see the metal join. Then you file it smooth with hand files, which sounds tedious but isn't—it's when you start to see the actual ring emerge. After that comes the part people talk about afterward: the planishing hammer and texture. You choose from three different finishes and hammer in the pattern you want. It's creative, tactile, and entirely yours.
Last decision is the polish. Inside only, for that artistic, hammered look, or fully polished for the glittery finish. Then you're done. The ring is yours. Sterling silver, made by you, in Dublin, in one afternoon. The workshop includes all materials and chocolate, and you don't need any experience—people of all fitness levels do this. Just show up on time (more than 10 minutes late and you lose your spot), wear clothes you don't mind getting a bit marked up, and bring anyone under 16 with a paying adult if that applies to you.
What’s included
Your class includes all sterling silver for your ring, use of all hand tools and equipment, expert instruction through every step (marking, cutting, forming, soldering, filing, texturing, and polishing), your choice of finish, and chocolate. You walk out with your finished ring.
Operated by Silver Works
Is this one for you?Book this if you want a hands-on souvenir from Dublin that you actually made yourself, not something bought in a shop—the small studio and expert instruction are what make it possible to go from raw silver to a finished ring in one afternoon.
