The Experience

I didn’t expect to start our Dublin photography tour in St. Stephen’s Green, standing under a tree while the air smelled faintly of wet grass (classic Irish weather, honestly). Our guide—Aoife, who somehow juggles being both an Instagram pro and just genuinely good company—showed us how to frame the ducks on the pond. I kept fumbling with my phone settings, but she didn’t mind. She even told us about her first camera—a hand-me-down from her uncle—and how she’d once dropped it into that very pond. Maybe that’s why she was so patient.

We ducked into this old shopping centre next, all glass and ironwork. I’d never noticed the ceiling before—light spilling through in weird angles, bouncing off everyone’s faces. Aoife pointed out where U2 played their early gigs (she said Bono had hair then; we all laughed). She explained some basic Instagram tricks I’d never thought about—timing posts, using natural light instead of filters. I tried to copy her angle for a shot but ended up catching my own reflection in the window. Not exactly influencer material yet.

Grafton Street was busy as always—buskers playing something mournful on guitar, people weaving past with shopping bags and umbrellas. We practiced street photography here, which mostly meant me trying not to look too obvious while taking photos of strangers (harder than you’d think). Aoife showed us how to play with contrast and talked about hashtags like they were secret spells. I probably still used them wrong.

The last stops were these tucked-away alleys with bright umbrella art overhead—one of those places you’d never find unless someone brought you there on purpose. The colors almost made up for the drizzle starting again. We finished at two “secret” spots that change every day depending on weather or what’s new around town; Aoife asked if anyone wanted to try portraits or focus on details instead of big scenes. She really listened.
