The experience
The boat leaves Ventry pier at 10am and heads into Dingle Bay toward the Blasket Islands, with crew watching for common dolphins, Minke whales, bottlenose dolphins, Risso's dolphins and basking sharks in season. You arrive at Great Blasket Island around 11am and transfer by licensed Zodiac tender to the slipway. An OPW guide leads a cultural and historical tour of the deserted village, or you can hike the loop walk (1.5 hours), swim in the bay off White Strand, or sit on the rocks watching seals. A small tea room and toilets are on the island.
At 2pm the boat picks you up and heads out to the outer Blasket islands (Inishvickilaun, Inish na Bró and sometimes Inish Tuaisceart and Tearaght), where puffins gather in rafts on the water and red deer stags stand silhouetted on the cliffs. Cathedral Rocks, a natural rock formation on Inish na Bró that resembles a gothic cathedral carved by winter storms, passes close by the boat. Tearaght, the westernmost Blasket island, holds the westernmost lighthouse in mainland Europe. The boat only circles it in settled weather and light swell.
Bring warm, windproof clothing and arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to park at Ventry pier. The boat departs at 10am sharp and will not wait for latecomers. Children are welcome from age 10. The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers and requires at least moderate fitness for the island walk and boat movement.
