The Experience
I didn’t think I’d ever see a whale’s back arching just meters away — not in Ireland, anyway. But there we were, bouncing over the waves off Dingle, salt stinging my lips and my knuckles tight on the rail. Declan, our skipper (and apparently a marine biologist — he had that quiet way of knowing things), slowed the boat so we could watch. The water was that cold blue-green you only get here, and it smelled like seaweed and diesel. Someone behind me gasped when a dolphin popped up beside us. I probably did too.
The Blasket Islands looked almost fake from the water — all sharp cliffs and green tufts, with seabirds swirling everywhere. We zipped into this narrow sea cave where the echo made even our nervous laughter sound huge. I tried to take a photo but mostly just got blurry splashes. Declan pointed out a cluster of seals sunning themselves on a rock; one lifted its head like it was judging us for disturbing its nap. The wind whipped around us but those waterproof jackets they gave us actually worked (I was skeptical at first — Irish rain is sneaky).
Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small out there — in a good way. There’s something about seeing puffins flapping by or catching that brief silence when everyone’s watching for another whale that sticks with you after. It’s not really about ticking animals off a list; it’s more like being let in on something wild and ordinary at the same time. I still think about that view back toward Dingle marina as we sped home, faces red from wind and grinning for no real reason except we’d done it.
