The Experience
We rolled out of Dublin just after sunrise, our driver (Patrick—he insisted we call him Paddy) already cracking jokes about the weather. It was that kind of grey where you can’t tell if it’s going to rain or not, but honestly, it felt right for Ireland. The car was quiet except for Paddy’s stories—he pointed out a field where he swore his cousin lost a boot as a kid, which made us laugh more than it should’ve. Crossing the country westward felt like slipping into another time zone, even though it’s just a few hours’ drive.
The first real stop was The Burren. I’d seen photos but standing there, with those weird limestone slabs underfoot and tiny wildflowers poking through cracks—it’s stranger and softer than I expected. There was this damp mineral smell in the air, and sheep somewhere off in the mist. Paddy told us about ancient tombs hidden among the rocks. He let us wander a bit on our own; I liked that he didn’t rush us or hover.
Galway Bay came next—just glimpses between hedgerows and then suddenly wide open, all wind and gulls. We drove along the Wild Atlantic Way for a while, windows down even though it was chilly because you kind of have to feel that salt air. At one point we stopped for tea in a place where everyone seemed to know Paddy by name (I think he likes being the center of attention). He teased me when I tried to pronounce “Dunguaire” properly—no chance.
And then finally, those Cliffs of Moher. I’d seen them on postcards my whole life but standing there is different—the wind actually howls up at you, seabirds wheel around below, and the grass feels almost fake-green against all that grey stone. My hands were cold from gripping the railing but I didn’t want to leave. There’s an option for a boat cruise to see the cliffs from below—I skipped it this time but maybe next round. On the way back we pulled up at Bunratty Castle for quick photos; honestly by then I was tired in that good way you get after a long day outside.
