The experience
You'll start in the evening when Yogyakarta's street food vendors are setting up. Your guide meets you and walks you to a charcoal coffee stall near Malioboro to try the city's traditional coffee while the evening crowd builds. From there you move through the neighborhood sampling as you go: satay, jajan pasar (market snacks), lumpia bamboo shoot spring rolls that have been a local legend since the 1970s, and whatever else is fresh that night. The guide explains what you're eating and why these dishes matter to Javanese life.
The walking part takes you past the Monument Tugu, an important historical landmark, and through a traditional market where you'll taste exotic local fruits (snake fruit, klengkeng), and learn how Indonesian cooks use the herbs and spices sold there. You'll also visit the area near Zero Point, where a monument marks the General Attack of March 1st, 1949, a moment the guide will explain. Dinner is nasi gudeg, the traditional Yogyakarta dish, cooked the old way. By this point you've eaten at six different places and tried jamu, the herbal drink locals drink to settle their appetite and aid digestion.
The tour shifts to transport for the final stretch. You'll ride a becak, a pedal-powered rickshaw, around the balustrade of the Sultan Palace, then head to Alun-Alun Kidul to ride the pedal light cars, the fairground attraction that closes out the evening. A ginger drink finishes the tour, and your guide takes you back to your hotel. The whole experience runs about four hours and stays under eight people per guide.
