Batik workshop near Prambanan temple

  • Introduction to Batik and tools
  • Learn Batik making process
  • Create Batik on handkerchief or tote bag
  • Take Batik souvenir home

The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the wax or the fabric — it was the quiet. Just this soft hush, broken by birds and the distant sound of scooters somewhere beyond the trees. We were close enough to see the top of Prambanan peeking over the palms, which honestly felt surreal. Our batik master, Pak Wayan, greeted us with a smile that made me relax right away (even though I was already worrying about messing up my design).

I’d always thought batik was just about dyeing cloth, but there’s this whole ritual to it. The smell of hot wax is sharp at first, then kind of comforting as you get used to it. Pak Wayan showed us how to hold the canting — that little copper pen for drawing with wax — and laughed when my lines wobbled all over the place. “Don’t worry,” he said, “imperfections are part of your story.” I liked that. We worked on a handkerchief-sized piece (you can do a tote bag if you want), dipping and waiting and chatting over sweet tea while colors set in.

Lunch was simple but so good — rice, vegetables, something spicy I couldn’t quite name. There was coffee too, thick and earthy. At one point, a breeze came through carrying incense from somewhere nearby; maybe someone praying at Prambanan? It’s hard not to get lost in small details here. When we finished and peeled off the wax to see our patterns underneath… well, mine looked nothing like Pak Wayan’s demo but I still think about how proud I felt holding it up.

What’s included

Your day includes all batik materials and tools, guidance from an English-speaking trainer who’s truly patient with beginners, bottled water throughout, coffee or tea breaks while you wait for colors to set, a simple local lunch served on site, plus your finished batik creation to take home at the end.
