The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the wax or the fabric — it was the quiet. Just this soft hush, broken by birds and the distant sound of scooters somewhere beyond the trees. We were close enough to see the top of Prambanan peeking over the palms, which honestly felt surreal. Our batik master, Pak Wayan, greeted us with a smile that made me relax right away (even though I was already worrying about messing up my design).

I’d always thought batik was just about dyeing cloth, but there’s this whole ritual to it. The smell of hot wax is sharp at first, then kind of comforting as you get used to it.
