The experience
Wringin temple anchors this tour as the largest structure in Trowulan and the believed main entrance to the Majapahit capital. From there, the day moves through four more temples: Rat Temple, named for the statues inside and dedicated to Durga; Parwati Temple with its intricate carvings; and Brahma Temple, recognizable by its stepped pyramid design. Between the temples sits the Museum of Trowulan, where the artifacts that survived centuries are laid out: sculptures, ceramics, jewelry and other relics that show what the empire actually built and valued. A knowledgeable guide walks you through each stop, connecting the architecture and objects to the stories of the Majapahit Kingdom, one of Southeast Asia's greatest empires.
The tour runs 6 to 7 hours total and includes a driver, fuel, parking fees, lunch and bottled water for each person. Pickup happens from your hotel anywhere in Surabaya, or from the cruise port if you're arriving by ship. If you book from a hotel, the tour operates as a private booking for your group. Cruise passengers are grouped with others from the same vessel into a small shared tour. The Museum of Trowulan closes on Mondays, so plan accordingly if that's your travel day.
