The experience

The lesson starts with pickup from your Canggu accommodation around 45 minutes before class time. Your instructor drives you in an air-conditioned vehicle to Batu Bolong, where consistent rolling waves work well for beginners, or to another nearby spot if the tide, swell or weather calls for it. The location choice matters: shallow, predictable waves mean you spend less time paddling and more time learning to stand.

Once in the water, you start with a safety briefing and a quick overview of the break and any local hazards. The instruction focuses on getting you onto the board and upright as quickly as possible. If you're not a confident swimmer or nervous about the ocean, you can stay in waist-deep water the whole time, or wear a floatation vest for extra reassurance. Your instructor stays with you in the water throughout, watching your form and adjusting your position on the board. The foam board you use is built for stability rather than speed, so it responds to small movements and forgives mistakes.

After the lesson ends, you get feedback on what worked and where to focus next time, take a photo to mark the moment, and drink a complimentary bottle of water before the drive back. The whole session runs about two and a half hours from pickup to drop-off.

Will I actually stand up on the board if I've never surfed before?

Yes. The instruction method and foam board are designed specifically so most students stand up in the first lesson. The focus is on getting you upright safely, not on riding waves far from shore.

What happens if the waves are too big or the water is rough on the day of my lesson?

Your instructor checks the conditions before you arrive and can move to another nearby break if Batu Bolong isn't working that day. The goal is to find waves that are consistent and rolling, not powerful or unpredictable.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to take the lesson?

No. If you're not confident in the water, you can stay in waist-deep water for the whole lesson and still learn to stand on the board. Your instructor can also provide a floatation vest if that helps you feel secure.
