The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel and transfer to Kumai, where you board the klotok: a traditional wooden river boat about 17 meters long with a roof-covered upper deck, simple mattresses, and basic toilet and shower facilities. The boat heads down the Sekonyer River into Tanjung Puting National Park, and the first stop is Pondok Tanggui, a rehabilitation center for ex-captive orangutans where you watch feeding time around 9 a.m. After that, the boat cruises downriver through mangrove and nipah palm forest while lunch is prepared on board. During this stretch you spot proboscis monkeys and other primates along the banks. The second feeding camp, Tanjung Harapan, comes after lunch, giving you another chance to observe the orangutans' gentle behavior.
A guided walk through the rainforest lets you learn about the park's flora and fauna from your English-speaking guide, and you have free time on the klotok to rest and take in the river. Dinner is served under the stars, with the option to stay up for fireflies illuminating the night sky. The return journey to Kumai happens the next morning after a light breakfast on the boat, with more wildlife spotting along the way before your transfer back to the hotel.
