The experience
The class walks you through batik from the start. You begin by drawing a pattern onto plain fabric. The designs are rooted in Malang's own artistic tradition, not generic templates. Then comes the waxing: you'll use a canting, the traditional tool, to apply hot wax by hand over your drawn lines. The wax acts as a resist, protecting those areas from the dye that comes next. The final step is dyeing the fabric in organic dyes made from natural ingredients, which give batik its characteristic earthy colors. By the end of the session, you walk away with a finished cloth you made yourself.
The workshop sits in a local artisan's home, so you're learning in the same space where batik makers work daily. Your guide speaks English and can answer questions as you move through each step. The women artisans who run the workshop are there too: they've turned batik-making into a creative practice that lets them work from home. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and the class provides all the materials and tools you need. You bring only yourself.
