The Experience

What's left of Old Batavia tells the story of the Dutch East India Company's power in Asia, and this tour walks you through it. You'll start at Museum Bahari, the former VOC spices warehouse, then climb the Controller Tower for a view of Sunda Kelapa Harbour—the same harbor that once moved the company's trade across the Indian Ocean. From there the route moves to the remaining city walls near the Eastern Warehouse and passes through the Kota Intan Drawbridge, a wooden structure that has stood for nearly 400 years and still raises for boat traffic.

The walk covers about 4 to 4.5 kilometers through the 17th- and 18th-century street grid and architecture that the Dutch colonial planners laid down. You'll see the Old Governor General's mansion, known as Toko Merah, and end at the Fatahilah Museum, where antiques from the 17th to 19th centuries fill the galleries and a dungeon sits below ground level. Your guide provides the context—the VOC's role, the logistics of the spice trade, why this port mattered—so the buildings and streets become evidence instead of just old structures.

Bring comfortable shoes and clothes suited to Jakarta's warm, humid weather year-round. An umbrella is worth packing, especially during the rainy season from October to April. The tour runs whether the weather is clear or wet. Public transportation is available nearby if you're arranging your own way to the meeting point, and the tour is free for infants under 3 years old; children aged 3 to 12 pay the same rate as adults and must be accompanied by one.
