The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup between 8 and 9am, then moves straight to the Welcome to Batam icon for a group photo before heading to Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya, the largest temple in Southeast Asia. From there you cross the Barelang Bridge, a chain of six bridges connecting the islands of Batam, Rempang and Galang: the landmark that defines the island for most visitors. Lunch lands at Bay City Seafood Restaurant, a local favorite, and the guide will point out what makes it worth the stop.
After lunch comes 70 Fahrenheit Koffie, where you move through the whole coffee journey: roasting, packing, brewing and tasting a cup of Indonesian signature coffee. The tour then swings through Batam Miniature Park to see miniatures of traditional Indonesian houses, stops at Muhammad Cheng Ho Mosque (a blend of Chinese and Arabic architecture), and gives you time at Batik Gallery for authentic Indonesian batik and handicrafts. A quick taste of Batam Layer Cake rounds out the stops before the final drop at Mega Mall, one of the island's main shopping centers. Return to your hotel lands between 6 and 7pm.
An air-conditioned bus carries the group throughout, and the guide speaks English. The tour runs 8 to 9 hours total. Terminal fees of S$29 per person are included, as is tipping for the guide and driver.
