The experience

Gebogan is a flower arrangement craft rooted in Balinese temple culture: flowers and carved coconut leaves woven together as offerings to the gods. The class teaches you the carving technique step by step, then how to arrange the flowers so the finished piece becomes both a spiritual offering and a decorative object people now give as gifts or display at home. You'll handle the materials yourself and complete a gebogan you can take with you.

After the arrangement work, you'll have your makeup applied using international-brand products in the Balinese style, then dress in a traditional costume. The final part of the class is learning a Balinese dance: the movements and the costume together are what make the experience feel like stepping into the culture rather than watching it from outside.

Pickup is included, and the guide conducts the class in English. The whole session runs about 2 hours, and children from age 4 can join. You'll need no prior experience or special fitness level. The carving and dancing are taught from the beginning.

What exactly is gebogan and why is it important in Balinese culture?

Gebogan is a flower arrangement made with carved coconut leaves, traditionally created as offerings to the gods in Balinese temples. It has become popular beyond religious use as a decoration and gift, but the carving technique itself carries the spiritual meaning of Balinese art and craft.

Will I actually learn to dance, or is it just a quick demonstration?

You learn to dance as part of the class: the instructor teaches you the movements while you're wearing the traditional costume, so you're practicing the dance itself, not just watching one.

What happens to the gebogan I make? Can I take it home?

Yes, you take the gebogan you create with you. Since it's made from fresh flowers and coconut leaves, it will last several days if kept in a cool place, though the flowers will gradually fade as they would in any arrangement.
