Three routes up Bali's sacred volcano, sunrise at the summit, descent through birdsong and city lights fading behind you

A guided trek up Mount Agung, Bali's highest and most sacred mountain, departing from Ubud with three route options ranging from 2,900m to 3,142m and taking 9 to 12 hours round-trip. You climb before dawn, reach the peak for sunrise, and descend the same day with a local guide, breakfast, walking sticks, gloves, headlamp, raincoat and first aid included. Minimum age is 17; moderate fitness required.

The Experience

You start in darkness, headlamp on, climbing dirt and rocky paths that switchback through forest. The route you choose—via Edelweiss Park to the full 3,142m, or via Pura Pasar Agung to either 3,142m or the lower 2,900m peak—sets the day's rhythm: the longest route takes 12 hours round-trip (7 up, 5 down), the shortest 9 hours. A local guide leads the way, and the climb itself is the point: steep, uneven terrain, no cable car or shortcut. You move at your own pace with support, stopping when you need it.

The summit arrives as the sky lightens. From 3,142 meters you see across Bali—the island laid out below, and on clear mornings, Mount Rinjani visible on Lombok across the strait. Birds start calling as the sun breaks the horizon. The descent follows the same path down, taking longer than the climb because of the steep rocky sections and the toll on your knees. Breakfast, chocolate, coffee and tea are provided during the trek; you bring water and any extra food you want.

The guide is a local who knows the mountain and speaks English. Gear is supplied—walking sticks, gloves, a headlamp, a raincoat if weather turns—and a first aid kit travels with the group. Hotel pickup from Ubud is included. The trek is not recommended if you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns; you need at least moderate fitness and good trekking shoes (which you bring). This is a physical day, not a sightseeing tour: the reward is the summit and the sunrise, earned by climbing.

Is this one for you?Choose the Edelweiss Park route if you want the full 3,142m summit and don't mind a longer day; pick the Pura Pasar Agung route to 3,142m for a shorter climb to the same peak; go for the 2,900m option if you want the sunrise experience with less total time on the mountain. All three routes start before dawn and end with descent the same day, so the guide and logistics stay the same—only the distance and duration change.
