The experience

Mud splattered my boots before we even hit the first bend. The air smelled like wet earth: thick and a bit sweet after last night’s rain. Our guide, Wayan, grinned as he checked our helmets one more time. “Ready? The real fun starts after the tunnel,” he said. I could hear distant roosters somewhere behind the trees.

The quad bike rumbled under me as we zigzagged between tall palms and bright green rice paddies. There were moments when the path dipped so sharply I caught my breath, then laughed out loud when we made it through. A couple of local kids waved from a bamboo bridge. Their sandals dangled off the edge as they watched us pass. The tunnel was cool and echoey, water dripping from above, and then suddenly we burst out into sunlight again.
