The experience
The tour starts with a 4–5 hour drive from Medan to Bukit Lawang, where you stay overnight before the jungle trek begins. After breakfast, you set out on a two-day, one-night trek through Gunung Leuser National Park, walking 6–7 hours or more each day to search for wildlife, learn about jungle medicines and food sources, and camp overnight under a dome tent. The trek is led by a licensed local guide who knows the forest and its inhabitants closely.
On the return from the jungle, you tube-raft back and spend an afternoon visiting a local village and bat cave before a final night in Bukit Lawang. The next morning, you drive 4 hours to Berastagi in the highlands, stopping at the base of Sinabung Volcano to see the Ghost Town and eruption damage. In Berastagi, you wake early for a three-hour sunrise hike up Mount Sibayak, then visit hot springs and Sipiso-Piso waterfall on the way back. A stop at the local fruit market rounds out the day before your last night in the highlands. On day six, a private car returns you to Medan airport or your hotel in 3–4 hours.
The tour is built around responsible travel: your guide is trained and certified, and the operator directs 10% of profits to village schools and community projects. Accommodation ranges from ecolodges in Bukit Lawang to hotels in Berastagi, and dinner is included throughout.

Is this one for you? This tour suits travelers with moderate to good fitness who want to spend real time in the rainforest and are ready for multi-hour daily walks and a night camping in the jungle. The fixed itinerary and certified guide mean you don't arrange the route or navigate yourself, but you do the trekking and climbing. It's not a vehicle-based tour. If you prefer shorter walks or accommodation only in hotels, look for day trips or less intensive options in the same region.
