The experience
The day starts at Dagdu Sheth Ganesh, a temple built in 1892 by a sweet maker after losing his son to plague. This temple became the birthplace of the annual Ganesh festival that Lokmanya Tilak organized to unite Indians against British rule: a moment that shaped the independence movement itself. From there you move to the Raja Dinkar Kelkar museum, one of the world's largest one-man collections, where a single collector gathered embroidered textiles, sculptures, antique vessels and Maratha swords from the remotest parts of India. The centerpiece is Mastani Mahal, a room recreated from the original palace ruins, telling the story of Baji Rao, the legendary Maratha prime minister, and his romance with Mastani.
Shaniwarwada comes next: the seat of power of the Peshwas, the prime ministers who made the Maratha empire a dominant force between the 17th and 19th centuries. Built in 1730, the palace witnessed early deaths, betrayals and a tragic love story. Local legend holds that the ghost of Narayanrao, murdered by his own family, haunts the fort, especially on full-moon nights. Your guide walks you through these stories and the palace's role in Pune's history. After lunch, you visit the Darshan museum, a modern biographical space dedicated to Sadhu Vaswani, a spiritual leader who championed women's upliftment and animal rights: his birth date is now celebrated globally as International Meatless and Animal Rights Day.
The tour ends at Aga Khan Palace, a national monument built in 1892 by Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III. This palace held Gandhi, his wife Kasturba and his secretary Mahadevbhai Desai during the 1942 Quit India movement. Walking through it, you see how the palace became a memorial to Gandhi's simple life and India's struggle for freedom. The private car and guide stay with you throughout, managing the route and the timing so the five stops fit into a single coherent day.

What is Dagdu Sheth Ganesh temple and why does it matter to Pune's history?
Dagdu Sheth Ganesh is a temple built in 1892 by a sweet maker grieving the loss of his son to plague. It became the inspiration for Lokmanya Tilak's annual Ganesh festival, which united Indians in the fight for independence from British rule and marked a turning point in India's freedom movement.
What will I see inside the Kelkar museum?
The Raja Dinkar Kelkar museum holds one of the world's largest one-man collections, gathered by a single collector who traveled remote parts of India. Why is Shaniwarwada considered haunted?
Shaniwarwada, built in 1730 as the seat of the Peshwas (Maratha prime ministers), witnessed early deaths, betrayals and tragic love stories within its walls.
