You’ll get to explore centuries-old Buddhist caves hidden inside Mumbai’s national park, hear stories from your guide, and see spots most visitors miss—all with private transport and local tips.
The drive through Sanjay Gandhi National Park always surprises me—one minute you’re dodging city traffic, the next you’re surrounded by thick green trees and the sound of birds. Our guide, Rajesh, pointed out a group of langur monkeys lounging near the park gate. The air smelled a bit earthy after last night’s rain, and it felt cooler than downtown Mumbai.
Kanheri Caves sit about 6 km inside the park. We parked up and walked along a shaded path; you’ll notice how quiet it gets, except for your footsteps and maybe a distant peacock call. The caves themselves are carved right into dark basalt rock—there are over a hundred of them, but Rajesh took us to some of the oldest ones first. Inside, we saw faded carvings of Buddha and old inscriptions that he explained dated back nearly two thousand years. Some caves were used for meditation or as living quarters for monks; you can still see where they slept or studied.
One cave has a stupa—a kind of Buddhist shrine—tucked away at the back. It’s easy to miss if you don’t know where to look. Rajesh told us monks would gather here for prayers. I liked just sitting there for a moment; it was cool and quiet, almost echoey. On our way back to the car, we passed a chai vendor selling sweet tea in little paper cups—perfect after climbing all those stone steps.
Kids can join (even infants in strollers), but there are some steps and uneven paths at the caves. Elderly travelers should be comfortable walking moderate distances.
It usually takes about 45-60 minutes by car from most hotels in Mumbai, depending on traffic.
Wear comfy shoes for walking and climbing steps. Bring water, sunscreen, and maybe an umbrella if it looks like rain.
You can take photos in most areas—just avoid flash near old paintings or carvings as advised by your guide.
Your private tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off anywhere in Mumbai, an English-speaking guide who knows all the cave stories, private car with driver, and flexible timing so you can explore at your own pace. Infant seats are available if needed—just let us know ahead of time.
