The Experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and moves through central Mumbai's Jewish quarter, a neighborhood shaped by the Sassoon family and other Baghdadi merchants who arrived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Your guide walks you through the Gateway of India, built to welcome King George V and Queen Mary, and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, which opened its doors on December 16, 1903, after Jamshedji Tata commissioned it. These landmarks frame the scale of the community that once thrived here.

The Sassoon Dock, the largest fishermen's port in Mumbai, was donated by Sir Albert Sassoon as a dedication to the fishing community; you'll see the local market and watch how traders work the waterfront. From there, the route moves into the synagogues themselves. Gate of Mercy Synagogue on Samuel Street is one of Maharashtra's first, with historical ties to the Muslim King Tipu Sultan. David Sassoon Synagogue, built by the patriarch himself, sits within the premises of Jewish schools and a guest house — the spaces where Baghdadi Jewish life was lived. A Bene Israeli Synagogue, still active for marriages and ceremonies, shows the community as it exists today.

Kenneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue, positioned at a prime tourist location, hosts delegates and VIPs and maintains services for visitors. The final stop is the David Sassoon Library, donated by Sir David Sassoon himself — the only library on earth that opens every single day of the year. The tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.
