Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Pondicherry's culture and heritage

  • Visit Aurobindo Ashram memorial
  • Take French heritage walk
  • Tour handmade paper factory
  • Walk along Pondicherry promenade
  • Travel to Auroville global village

The experience

The tour opens at the Aurobindo Ashram, the memorial to Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, a philosopher and revolutionary who became Pondicherry's most famous resident. You get a brief account of his life, his ideas and his most celebrated disciple, Mirra Alfassa, in a space designed for meditation. From there a French heritage walk takes you through the city's heart to see the colonial architecture that marks Pondicherry's connection to France: the exquisite style of buildings and streets that shaped the old quarter.

The handmade paper factory is where the day shifts from history to craft. Sri Aurobindo Paper Factory has operated for fifty years, making paper from 100% cotton rag pulp. You watch the production process from raw material through silk screen printing and marbling, seeing how the sheets are finished by hand. After this you walk the promenade facing the Bay of Bengal, then break for a vegetarian south Indian lunch at a traditional restaurant.

The afternoon takes you to Auroville, a settlement founded on the vision of a place where people from across the world could live as global citizens without national boundaries. Thousands of residents from different countries have made it their home. You see how they practice sustainable living and view the Matri Mandir, a giant dome for silent meditation at the centre of the community: visible from outside on a day visit (entry to meditate inside requires advance permission obtained in person). The guide is with you for the full eight hours, and your hotel provides the pickup point.
