Summary

Walk Mumbai’s Dharavi to see recycling, pottery, and leather crafts with locals

You’ll walk through Mumbai’s Dharavi with a local guide who knows every shortcut—watch recycling workshops in action, meet potters shaping clay by hand in Kumbharwada, and peek inside leather workshops buzzing with life. Expect real conversations and moments that stick with you long after you leave those busy alleys behind.

You know you’re in Mumbai when the air changes—hot, thick, a bit sweet but also sharp with something metallic. We met our guide just outside Third Wave Coffee (I was grateful for the caffeine) and right away he grinned and said, “Welcome to my neighborhood.” Not in that touristy way either. He actually lives here. The first few minutes walking into Dharavi were honestly overwhelming—so much movement, people weaving around us carrying sacks of plastic bottles or stacks of cardboard taller than I am. The sound of machines chewing through plastic is everywhere. I tried not to stare but it’s hard not to be curious about how all this works so tightly together.

Our guide—his name was Imran—knew every shortcut and called out greetings in Hindi to shop owners or kids darting past. He pointed out a workshop where men were melting aluminum cans into shiny bars; the heat rolling out of that doorway made me step back instinctively. There’s this constant hum in Dharavi, like everyone’s working on something important. We ducked into a narrow alley where the smell changed—suddenly earthy and smoky—and there was Kumbharwada, the pottery colony. Rows of clay pots drying in the sun, some still warm from the kiln. I tried shaping a bit of clay (badly), which made one of the potters laugh and shake his head at my lopsided attempt.

I didn’t expect to feel so welcome here. Kids waved at us from rooftops; an old woman offered us chai from her stoop (I spilled half of mine, nerves maybe). Imran explained how families live above their workshops—two worlds stacked on top of each other in these tiny houses with blue doors and peeling paint. We stopped at a leather workshop too; the smell was strong but not unpleasant, kind of like new shoes mixed with dust and sweat. Someone handed me a scrap piece to feel—soft as butter but tough underneath.

By the end I realized this wasn’t about poverty or hardship—it was about how people make things work with what they have, even if it looks chaotic from outside. I still think about those alleyways sometimes—the noise, the colors, even that awkward moment when I nearly tripped over a stray dog asleep in the sun.
