The experience

Lalbagh, which means "Red Garden," was laid out by Hyder Ali in 1760 and expanded to its current 240 acres by British and Indian horticulturists. The walk starts at the West Gate near Lalbagh Metro station and moves through the gardens while the air is still cool. You'll pass the White Silk-Cotton Tree, a Ceiba Pentendra that stands 300 years old and towers over everything around it, then move toward the Glass House: a 19th-century structure built by the British in the style of the Crystal Palace in London. The artificial lake itself traces a path through the garden, and the route takes in copper pods, jacarandas, royal palms, rain trees, tulip trees, bamboo, and coffee plants as you go.

From the Glass House, the walk continues past wooden sculptures carved by local artists from fallen trees, a Ficus Benjamina boulevard, and the Kempegowda tower on Stone Hill. A granite formation estimated to be 3 billion years old. You'll see a 270-year-old mango tree planted by Hyder Ali himself, a Japanese Bonsai garden, and a floral clock before reaching the northern exit. The entire walk takes two to three hours and ends near Mavalli Tiffin Room, a five-minute walk from the garden's main gate.

Breakfast at MTR happens after the walk, except on Mondays when you'll eat at Nirantara restaurant near the West Gate instead. MTR opened in 1924 and remains one of Bangalore's most popular vegetarian eateries. Arriving early in the morning means you may encounter a queue, but the food justifies the wait. All entry fees, taxes and breakfast are included in the price.
