The experience
You start at the Sri Aurobindo Bhavan, a 1905 mansion overlooking Ulsoor Lake that blends vernacular and colonial architecture. Built with Madras roofing, semi-circular windows, and classical columns, it later became the residence of Nepal's Raja of Bajhang before his wife donated it to the Sri Aurobindo Society in 1979. The guide walks you through its garden and explains the building's transformation into a spiritual center: home to meditation rooms, an extensive library, and a gallery holding Sri Aurobindo's relics.
The walk centers on the Someshwara Swamy Temple, nearly 1,000 years old and built during the Chola dynasty, with later Vijayanagara-era additions. Inside, you'll see intricately carved pillars, an ornate gopuram, and detailed sculptures of Hindu deities. Devotees whisper wishes into the ears of the Nandi statue guarding the sanctum of Lord Someshwara (Shiva's local name). The temple comes alive during Maha Shivaratri and Poo Pallaki with grand rituals and chanting, though the guide shows you its timeless beauty regardless of the season.
From there, you move through the Ulsoor Bazaar, a trade hub for generations filled with colorful textiles, glittering jewelry, fragrant spices, and fresh produce stalls. The guide points out street vendors selling flowers and traditional South Indian snacks as you soak in the bargaining and aromas. Then you visit the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara, built in the 1940s with white marble, a golden dome, and intricate carvings. Every Sunday it hosts a langar: a free community meal open to all visitors regardless of faith. The tour ends at Holy Trinity Church, built in 1851 with English Gothic architecture, pointed arches, and stained-glass windows. Winston Churchill is believed to have attended services here when stationed in Bangalore.
