The experience
The day starts before dawn with a drive through Narendranagar, which opens a view over the Ganga and Rishikesh below. You reach Kunjapuri Temple as the sun rises, high enough (1,676 meters) that on clear mornings the Himalayan peaks show in the distance. Chai and breakfast wait at the temple. The guide explains the site's place in Hindu practice while you eat.
The descent is the heart of the day. You walk down toward Rishikesh through small villages where the landscape shifts from high forest to terraced fields, taking 3 to 5 hours depending on pace. Midway, the trail reaches Neer Waterfall, where the water runs clear enough to jump in and cool off. The hike is steep but steady, and trekking poles come with you to ease the knees on the way down.
Lunch is an Indian thali served in a restaurant in Tapovan, on the outskirts of Rishikesh. You finish the day in town, with private transport back to your hotel. The guide speaks English, French or Hindi, and the operator provides bottled water, bars, nuts, fruit, chocolate and juice throughout the hike.
