The experience
The tour starts with a 30-minute transfer to Marin Drive, where you board the motorboat for a cruise around Cochin Harbor. The boat passes Bolghatty Island and the surrounding waterways before returning to Fort Cochin: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours on the water. From there, your guide takes you through Jew Town, the historic center of the spice trade, to the Paradesi Synagogue (closed Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays). Next is Mattancherry Palace, also called the Dutch Palace, built in the 16th century and closed Fridays and government holidays.
The route then moves through two major churches: Santa Cruz Basilica, one of India's largest and most impressive, and St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India. Both require a dress code: men need a shirt and pants. Women need a full-sleeve top and knee-covered skirt or pants. If time allows, you can browse the spice markets and handicraft shops in Mattancherry, though meals are at your own expense.
The final stop is the Chinese Fishing Nets along the waterfront, where local fishermen still operate the massive wooden structures to catch fish. These nets have been in use for centuries and remain a working part of daily life in Kochi. After this, your guide transfers you back to your hotel or the cruise port.

Top questions
What exactly are the Chinese Fishing Nets and how do they work?
The Chinese Fishing Nets are large wooden structures with nets suspended from poles, operated by hand using a system of weights and pulleys. Kochi fishermen lower the nets into the water, let them sit briefly, then raise them back up to catch fish. They've been used this way for centuries and remain the primary fishing method for many local families.
Can I visit the Paradesi Synagogue and Mattancherry Palace on any day of the week?
The Paradesi Synagogue is closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays, so plan accordingly if those days matter to your schedule. Mattancherry Palace is closed on Fridays and Indian government holidays. Check the local holiday calendar before booking to avoid missing either site.
How long is the motorboat cruise around Cochin Harbor?
The motorboat cruise lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours and covers Cochin Harbor, the surrounding waterways and Bolghatty Island before returning to Fort Cochin. The boat is non-air-conditioned, so you'll feel the breeze and have open views of the water and shoreline.
What's the dress code for entering the churches and synagogue?
Men must wear a shirt and pants. Women must wear a full-sleeve top or shirt and a knee-covered skirt or pants. This applies to the Paradesi Synagogue, Santa Cruz Basilica and St. Francis Church. Plan your clothing accordingly, as you won't be able to enter without meeting these requirements.
Does the tour include meals or can I eat during the day?
Food and drinks are not included in the tour price. If your schedule allows, you'll have time to stop for lunch or browse the spice and handicraft shops in Mattancherry at your own expense. Your guide can recommend local options.
Will I have time to shop for spices or handicrafts in Mattancherry?
Yes, if your schedule allows, the tour includes time to browse the spice markets and handicraft shops in Jew Town and Mattancherry. These are central to the area's history as a trading hub, though any purchases are at your own expense.
