The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in Fort Kochi, Wellingdon Island, Kundanoor or Ernakulam MG Road, then a transfer to Alleppey: the hub of Kerala's backwaters and the place Lord Curzon called "The Venice of the East" in the early 20th century. Once aboard the houseboat, you spend roughly three hours cruising slowly through a web of rivers, canals and lagoons that flow into the Arabian Sea, passing through village areas and past the lush vegetation that defines this landscape.

Lunch happens on the water: Kerala cuisine served as you navigate, with rice, vegetable dishes, fish, chicken and more. A guide travels with you, and three additional staff members are there to handle the boat and make sure you're comfortable the whole time. The pace is unhurried. This is not a sightseeing rush but a slow drift through the waterways, watching how people live along the banks and how the landscape shifts from paddy fields to coconut palms to the open water where the backwaters meet the sea.

The full day runs about 6.5 hours from pickup to drop-off. Bottled water is included. At the end of the cruise, you're transferred back to your hotel in the same vehicle that picked you up.
