The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Kochi hotel or Fort Kochi, or from Cochin Airport if you're arriving that morning. A private air-conditioned car takes you to either Alleppey or Kumarakom—you pick which one—where you board a traditional Kerala houseboat called a Kettuvallam. A tender coconut welcome drink waits as the crew prepares to cast off.

Once the houseboat is moving, the backwaters become the whole day. You'll drift past children waving from the shore, people working in paddy fields, small ferries loaded with fish and coconut, and rustic homes tucked among swaying palms. Around noon, the chef serves a traditional Kerala lunch on a banana leaf—fish prepared in Kerala style, eaten while the houseboat is still moving through the water. The afternoon is yours to rest in a cabin or stay on deck watching the shoreline. Around 4 PM, tea arrives with snacks like banana fritters and biscuits. You check out from the houseboat in the evening and return to Kochi by 7 PM.

The driver who picks you up speaks English and can answer practical questions, but is not a guide. If you want someone to explain what you're seeing and answer questions about the villages and the backwater ecosystem, book the option that includes an English-speaking guide—they travel with you from Kochi pickup through Kochi drop-off. Italian and Russian-speaking guides are available for an extra charge.
